Counselling and Coaching

What's the difference?

Both counselling and coaching provide a safe and confidential space to explore the thoughts, feelings and challenges in your life.

Perhaps you are feeling depressed, anxious or lost? Maybe you are struggling to cope with life, lack confidence, or have issues with relationships, disordered eating or workaholism? If this is you, counselling is a good option. We would work together weekly for sessions of one hour, to understand what is going on for you. Talking with a reliable and non-judgmental counsellor is therapeutic in itself, but we will also explore your past history, which helps to uncover hidden roots of distress and foster fresh perspectives.

Coaching is typically sought by people who have a sense of a goal that they wish to work towards, and who are not conscious of distress or a lack of wellbeing. As a coach, my role is not to tell you what to do, but to help you to develop your own resources to clarify objectives, make plans, overcome hurdles and move forward. We would typically work together monthly for 1.5-2 hours.

In practice, counselling and coaching exist on a continuum, with counselling at one end being more concerned with alleviating distress and more open ended in terms of scope, and coaching at the other being more concerned with maximising potential within an agreed scope. Having said that, the overlap can be significant. Some coaching clients can benefit from working at psychological depth (eg. it's easier to overcome internal hurdles if you have discovered why they are there), and some counselling clients can benefit from setting specific goals to work to (eg. asserting boundaries around work or relationships).

I have over twenty years' experience as a coach and counsellor. Because of my depth and breadth of training and experience in both approaches, I can work with you as counsellor, coach, or as an integrative coach-therapist, moving between them according to your needs. This integrated approach is sometimes called personal consultancy. If you're not sure what might work best for you, contact me by phone or email for a complementary telephone discussion.
